Leather soles
Leather breathes, moulds to the foot and gives a dress shoe its elegant slim profile. It also wears faster and offers very little grip on wet pavement.
Rubber and Vibram soles
Rubber lasts two to three times longer, grips ice and gravel and takes the abuse of a Colorado winter without complaint. It adds a little bulk and a slightly stiffer feel.
Mixing the two
A thin rubber topy bonded to a leather sole is a common compromise: you keep the look and the flex, and add grip and roughly double the sole life.
How to decide
Think about where you actually walk. Office carpet and parking garages favour leather; trails, job sites and snowy sidewalks favour rubber.
