Why altitude is hard on leather
Front Range humidity often sits below 30 percent. Leather loses moisture to the air, the fibres stiffen and creases turn into cracks that cannot be undone.
A simple monthly routine
Brush off dust, wipe with a barely damp cloth, let the boot dry away from heat, then work a thin coat of cream conditioner in with your fingers. Ten minutes a month is enough.
Salt and snowmelt
Road salt draws moisture out of leather and leaves white tide lines. Wipe boots down with a solution of one part white vinegar to five parts water the same day you wear them in slush.
What to avoid
Never dry wet boots by a heater or in a car in summer. Rapid drying is what shrinks and cracks the fibres, not the water itself.
